Ascot Gold Cup Result: Yeats pure poetry |
|
Yeats duly landed 11-8 favouritism and his his third successive Ascot Gold Cup at Royal Ascot 2008. Yeats is a very classy horse for a staying race such as the 2m4f Ascot Gold Cup. he was once ante-post favourite for The Epsom Derby as a three-year-old before muscle problems ruled him out of that race. Yeats' class certainly shone through as he drove clear of enigmatic Geordieland and the previously unbeaten Coastal Path in third. The latter was tackling this marathon trip for the first time and the last half mile proved beyond his reserves of stamina. There are whispers that trainer Aidan O'Brien may target Yeats at the Melbourne Cup in Australia this year. However O'Brien does have a host of potential challengers for that race including Mahler, who was third in The Melbourne Cup last year, and Septimus. Back to the Ascot Gold Cup, where Allegretto was a running-on fourth after being given far too much to do by champion jockey elect Ryan Moore. Moore seems to be determined to copy the exaggerated hold-up tactics employed by the often frustrating Jamie Spencer. Geordieland is a tricky customer and his challenge needs to be delayed to the last minute. As a result Geordieland's jockey Shane Kelly was on the receiving end of some criticism for not waiting longer than two furlongs out to tackle Yeats. However if Kelly had delayed his challenge any longer Yeats would have flown as Johnny Murtagh's mount was beginning to power home. The Grandstand jockeys in the racing press will always be there and unfortunately, however long they live and however many Royal Ascot's they watch, they still remain as ignorant of race-riding as the day they were conceived.
